I think I'm late in discovering this trend, but I've just been introduced to grey scale colouring pages. At first I thought, doesn't that take the fun out of blending and shading, so I decided to give it a go.
I can see how colouring these images would help beginners learn where shading occurs and also how it provides a fun, fast, colouring experience. I also found I could still have fun with my blending, working with the grey scale, but as the printed image is designed to not move with the alcohol ink, when working on the grey scale areas is strange when you are used to bleaching back your darker colours. However it does eliminate one of the main problems of flat images as the darkness is there and you can't take it away.
I developed my own grey scale image of this half sunflower so you can have a go and see what you think. You can download it here. I've placed it at the bottom of an A4 page so if you wish to fold it into a card you can.
I've also put the line art image in the file share area if you want to have a go colouring it. If you lower the darkness settings on your printer then your finished image can be edgeless.
To colour along with me I have made a video detailing what colours of Spectrum Noir Illustrators I used and showing how I used them. To watch the video click on the image below
